TOTAL MEXICAN EXPORTS OF TEXTILE AND APPAREL PRODUCTS

From January to December 2023, the value of exports grew 8% compared to the same period in 2022.

There are companies in the Textile-Apparel Industry that are vertically integrated from yarn manufacturing to the making of the final product, which supports the integration of the entire industry.

As of December 2023, exports grew 68% compared to the same month in 2022.

When reviewing foreign trade figures, the strengthening (14%) of the exchange rate must be considered, as it may impact the percentage variation with respect to previous years.

Textiles

From January to December 2023, carpet exports grew by 40%, while nonwovens and fabrics decreased by -18% compared to the same period in 2022.

Apparel

From January to December 2023, pants and T-shirts were the main products exported; these two items represented 36% of total exports. Surgical towels stood out in the period, with an increase of 8% compared to the 2022 period.

From January to December 2023, total exports were $9,261 million dollars, 91% of exports of textile and apparel products were destined to the United States ($8,429 million dollars).

The other countries with the highest participation during that same period were: Nicaragua $99 million dollars, Canada $97 million dollars, Guatemala $84 million dollars.

Third quarter Exports 2023 by Federal Entity. Millions of dollars

As of the third quarter of 2023, the states of Coahuila, Puebla and Baja California were the entities with the largest participation in Textile Industry exports with 227 million dollars, 213 million dollars and 169 million dollars respectively.

With respect to the Apparel Industry, in the third quarter of the year, the three main exporting states were Coahuila with 417 million dollars, Baja California with 376 million dollars and Puebla with 293 million dollars respectively.

United States Imports of Textile and Apparel Products

When reviewing foreign trade figures, the strengthening (14%) of the exchange rate must be considered, as it may impact the percentage variation with respect to previous years.

During 2023, Mexico ranked as the fifth trading partner of the United States in terms of total  imports, with a registered value of $5.275 billion dollars. Despite the reduction in total imports from the United States (-20%), there was only a -4% decrease in those coming from Mexico.
China continues to be the United States’ main trading partner. During 2023, the United States imported textile and clothing products worth $26.7 billion from China, which represented a decrease of -23% compared to the previous year (2022).

The main items that the United States imported from the world were pants, sweaters, T-shirts and coats, which together represented 40% of that country’s total imports.

In 2023, imports of textile and apparel products were 11.83 billion dollars and showed a decrease of -6% compared to the same period in 2022. In contrast to the same period in 2021, the growth was 23%.

From January to December 2023, the Textile products that registered the highest shares in imports were Woven Fabrics (19%), Nonwovens (14%), Coated Fabrics (12%) and Filament Fabrics (12%), which represented 56% of total imports.

Regarding Apparel products, Pants (17%), T-shirts (12%), Sweaters (10%) and Dresses (5%) accounted for 46% of total imports.

Regarding imports from the Textile sector, the main country of origin is the United States, with a share of 42% of the total value of imports.

Imports in the Apparel sector come mainly from China, which represent 32% of the total.

In total (Textile-Apparel), China (36%) and the United States (19%)Vietnam (5%), and Bangladesh (5%) concentrate 65% of the origin of total imports.

In December 2023, the Trade Balance showed a surplus of 402 million dollars. Imports were 942 million dollars and exports 1,344 million dollars.

Textile-Apparel GDP

In the fourth quarter of 2023, the manufacturing GDP was 5,176,776 million pesos. The share of the Textile-Clothing Industry was 1.8%.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, the GDP of the Textile-Apparel Industry was 94,908 million pesos.

Composition of GDP, Subsectors

The manufacture of apparel clothing products includes the production of textile inputs such as: yarn, nonwovens, etc. This integration reflects the 56% contribution to the GDP of the Textile-Apparel industry.

The Textile-Apparel GDP has not been able to recover from the pandemic, it shows a decrease of -19%, compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.

Formal employment in recent years

Number of formal jobs in the Textile-Clothing Industry

In the month of December 2023, a total of 1,213,828 jobs were registered, of which 818,489 are informal and 395,339 are formal.

From March 2019 to August 2020, a total of 75 thousand jobs were lost and 2019 employment levels have not been recovered.

The majority of formal jobs belong to the Apparel sector. In December 2023, there were 267 thousand jobs in this sector, which represent 68% of total formal jobs.

It is worth highlighting that the Textile sector is capital intensive, while the Apparel sector is labor intensive. For every job created in the Textile industry, 4 jobs can be generated for the Apparel sector, which is why the Textile Industry drives employment growth in the production chain.

Within the Manufacturing Industries, the textile-apparel sector is where there is the highest concentration of women who work, with the manufacturing apparel products being the one with the highest participation in formal employment with 58%, equivalent to 155,896 of jobs for women.
